No One Else Would Do
Gone With the Wind is my all time favorite movie EVER. I've seen it more times than I can count but it's a three digit number, I know that.
I will one day write a complete ode to the movie, to Scarlett and Rhett, to Mammy and all the things that keep me going back for more. This is just a little tid bit about Viv.
Vivian Leigh is the actress who plays Scarlett. She is, in my opinion, incredibly gorgeous and perfect as Scarlett. I'm watching her biography on The Biography Channel. They are telling all about the different actresses who tested for the role. Or roll as Britney Spears says.
As much as I love Bette Davis (All About Eve, hello! AWESOME movie), she is not Scarlett. She played a similar role in Jezebel and quite frankly, I compared it to GWTW and Scarlet and it fell short. She was offered this role after she lost the role of Scarlett. Scarlett and Julie are very similar.
I've never seen Paulette Goddard's work, not a movie or anything. I did see some of her screen tests and it's very weird. She is more Scarlett than Bette but, she's no Vivian. I agree that she is a beauty, too but, I just can't imagine GWTW without Vivian Leigh.
I know that if someone else would've played her, I'd never know the difference. I think I probably wouldn't love the movie like I do. I think THAT'S the truth.
